July Activities

Hey Folks!   The Benscreek Canoe Club has activities for July.   Tomorrow (July 8th) is the Jim Brett cabin outing.  Jim’s cabin sits on the outskirts of Confluence on a very private 70 acres.   His son, Neil will be making his famous hot wings and pulled pork.   The club will provide hamburgers.   Just bring a covered dish.  Bacon and eggs will be served in the morning as well as hot coffee.  Arrive anytime after 4:30 PM.

On Saturday (July 9th), the middle Yough paddle trip is scheduled.   Great for beginner kayakers and canoers.  Currently we are looking for a trip leader, but odds are that the trip will be lead by committee.   Meet at Ramcat parking area at 10 AM.  We will set shuttle and be on river (Class II) by  11  am.  Pack a lunch to be eaten on the river.  The middle Yough runs about 8 miles and should be off water by 3:00 PM.

Directions:   take 281 South from Somerset.  Go through New Centreville, New Lexington, Kingwood, Ursina.   At the end of Ursina turn right at a 45 degree angle.  This is Groff Road (sign for Ohiopyle 15 miles).   Go ½ block.  Make right onto Jersey Hollow Road.   Go 1.3 miles and look for yellow modular house on right.   Jim’s driveway is just past this house on the right .   Single stone pillar and Jim will have a paddle sticking there as well.   Turn right, go to second driveway on the right which will be marked.   Go to top  of hill .  You are there.  (814)243-2363 is Jim’s cell.  Steve’s cell is (814)241-9800.    There is good cell service at cabin.   He has 4-5 bedrooms, few couches, plenty of tent space and floor space.  1st come, 1st served for overnight accommodations.

Full Moon Paddle at the Que on Friday July 15th.

Moon scheduled to rise at 8:55 PM.  Should be visible around 9:20 PM.   Will have bon fire, grill will be hot.  Light stix will be provided.  Boats must be registered!  Meet at 7 PM.

The Rails-To-Trails Conservancy is having their annual bicycle sojourn on our trails this year.  There will be over 250 bikers from all over the US biking on the Ghost Town, the West Penn, the Hoodlebug and other trails in our region.  It will be a great event that will showcase our beautiful region, our great trails, and our friendly people.

On Friday July 22nd, they are offering a paddling option from the Conemaugh Dam down to Avonmore.  Those of you who have paddled in the annual CVC river sojourn are familiar with this section: this is the day we stop in Saltsburg for Canal Days.  The section is easy and typically takes about 2 hours in the morning with lunch and another 1 ½ hours in the afternoon.

When we made the offer to bikers to take a day off and paddle the Conemaugh and Kiski, little did we realize that 215 of them would take us up on it.  Even though the water is flat and easy, that is still a lot of people!

We are looking for about 15-20 Benscreek paddlers who would be willing to paddle along with the group.  We will have lead and sweep paddlers and we would just like to have some experienced boaters throughout the pack to keep an eye on things.  You don’t need to be an expert paddler, just someone who is comfortable maneuvering their boat on flat water.  I can’t promise you much except good day on the water, a chance to show some out of towners what a great region we live in, and a couple of really good meals prepared by the RTC chef (yes they have a chef!)

If you can help us out, we would really appreciate it.  Give Mike Burk  a call at (814) 248-6118 or email me at mburk105@gmail.com
